Who is excited for the Summer Olympics? It's fun to watch all the events unfold on the television and root on the most promising athletes, but consider getting more involved! Turn your retirement village into the Olympic Village with your friends and neighbours.
Check out these tips on how to make the most of the 2016 Rio Olympics in Sugar Valley.
1. Set up tournaments
What are your favourite activities to do around Sugar Valley? Certainly golfing on the course is a popular outing for you all, so as the Olympics go on this month, turn your sport into a tournament with gold medals and even see how everyone compares to the Olympians themselves. Other activities that would be fun to convert into a friendly competition include synchronised swimming, bowling, croquet, or, for a test of mental fitness, cards.
Staying both mentally and physically active as you age is incredibly important, but it doesn't have to be boring. Partaking in these activities is a great, fun way to do so.
2. Decorate accordingly
Assign each of your homes a country to support. It will be exciting for everyone to learn something new by researching the new culture, and equally entertaining to then teach others what they've learned. Really get into the spirit of things by decorating as the local customs seem fit. It could be a rewarding project to pull the accents together yourself. Plus, arts and crafts projects are as mentally stimulating as they are relaxing, with this educational twist, you'll be really strengthening your memory functions. Pretty soon, the whole block will begin to look like the Olympic Village itself.
3. Host themed meals
After everyone has their own country to represent you should create a feast schedule. Each night of the games can be dedicated to culture's national food. Getting out of your comfort zone and expanding your taste buds to learn how to cook a new meal is the perfect way to spice things up. Just be sure to pay attention to your routine nutrition guidelines. Stick to lean proteins, include a good mix of fruits and veggies and opt for whole grains instead of whites.
At the end of the day, the Olympic Games make for the perfect excuse to celebrate your country as well as your own physical and mental wellbeing. Go have some fun with it!
