Born and bred in Newcastle and married in 1961, we moved into our first home in New Lambton where we had two lovely children, Stephen and Karen. Maralyn worked mainly as a doctor’s receptionist until retiring in 2009 and represented Newcastle in both basketball and netball.
I was heavily involved in basketball and as a player represented Newcastle, NSW and Australia in the 1970 World Championships. I became involved in sports administration and was the CEO of the Newcastle Falcons for many years.
The last twelve years I worked as a partner of Lings Trophies in Broadmeadow, retiring in 2010. After living in New Lambton for over 50 years it was going to take something very special for us to sell up and move. That something special was Sugar Valley Lifestyle Estate – we looked at many similar villages throughout NSW, but none came close to Sugar Valley for our personal requirements.
The location – only 20 minutes to town and 5 minutes to family, the position – great views of the golf course and mountains, the excellent finish to the 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom brick home, built on slab and freestanding, the strong feeling of friendship upon entering the village and the low maintenance.
We have been in our home for 6 months now and are still excited every day as all our neighbours are courteous and friendly. We have found the management very approachable and most helpful to any of our problems. There are plenty of activities in the new Community Centre or peace and quiet if desired. The membership to the Sugar Valley Golf Club was an added bonus as we are both keen golfers.
We are often asked what it is like living in the village and the answer is always the same – we love it! Should have done it sooner.
