There's never been any shortage of advice on exactly what we should be including in our diets to keep ourselves fit and healthy. But while some trends come and go, one that seems to have stood the test of time is that superfoods should feature in at least some of our meals.

So what exactly are superfoods? And just how easy is it to make sure we include them in our diet while living in retirement communities?

A definition

The American Heart Association (AHA) explains that there's no set criteria for determining exactly what is and isn't a superfood. However, they're usually considered to be foods that have particular benefits for parts of the body, such as your heart.

Experts are keen to point out that as with any food, they need to be incorporated into a wider, healthy diet in order to have the most impact.

"As a registered dietician, I'd like to see people eat more of the super foods like whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, fish, fatty fish and all fruits and veggies," Kris-Etherton, Professor of Nutrition at The Pennsylvania State University in University Park, told the AHA.

The Australian Super Food Company explains that people have been eating these foods for thousands of years it's only recently that they've been labelled superfoods. In fact, Indigenous communities have been eating natural produce from the land for more than 50,000 years!

Including superfoods in your diet

There are some items that you may want to include in your diet and the chances are that many of them feature already. Beetroot, for example, is rich in nitrates and has been linked to a slight decline in blood pressure when eaten regularly. Another ingredient that's well worth a look is blueberries. Although they're small, these berries are a great source of vitamin K, as well as various other antioxidants. In fact, the UK's NHS says "if you make only one change to your diet, it should be to add blueberries"!

One of the major benefits of superfoods is that you can add them to meals you'd otherwise have, or in the case of blueberries, enjoy them as a snack throughout the day. They don't have to involve making any special effort, which is one reason they have become so popular over the past few years.
